This page is dedicated to interviews with wooden surfboard enthusiasts in the lead up to & after the event on March 16 at Tomewin St, Currumbin Beach and will be added to as we find more of these creative artisans.
Ok here’s the final video from the inaugural Eco Challenge Gold Coast event for 2014. So thank you maestro filmmaker Dave Johnston of Chai Time Productions for all our collection of wonderful interviews and the Pièce de résistance this fly around which captures the event beautifully.
Towards the end of the event we asked Rene & Vicki from Sting Glide about their involvement in the festival and what reaction the public had to their wooden handplanes.
During the event we caught up with Grant Newby who’d only just returned from a Kiwi sojourn, so thanks heaps Grant for coming along and bringing your wooden surfboards for everyone to check out.
In this interview we speak to Rene Nippard from Sting Glide who handcrafts bodysurfing handboards made out of locally sourced Paulownia wood, recycled Australian Red Cedar & finished with Linseed & Gum Turpentine.
In this interview we speak to Geoff Moase from Dovetail Surfboards in Burleigh Heads at his factory where he produces a full range of wooden boards including handplanes, bodyboards, alaia’s, hollow short & longboards.
And here is an interview with Greg Howell event organiser for Eco Challenge Gold Coast & owner of Climate Wave Enterprises, eco-logical event solutions. ” This project evolved from a love of the ocean, surfing, community and sustainable events. We’ve met many people that have the same passion for the environment and community and with this event we hope to highlight the advantages of thinking outside the square while developing projects that align with our ethical standards and leaving environmental & social legacies.”
In this interview we spoke briefly to the Godfather of modern day wooden surfboard shaping & riding Tom Wegener at Surfrider Eco Challenge on the Sunshine Coast in November, 2013.
In this interview we spoke to Grant Newby “I love my surfing and to be able to spend my time at the beach, out among the waves is one of life’s true pleasures.”
We have more interviews coming…keep your eyes out.
