Each year, 6.4 million tonnes of rubbish is dumped into our oceans. It is estimated that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile of our oceans and over 100,000 marine creatures die each year from plastic ingestion or entanglement. It’s alarming statistics like these that motivate the Surfrider Foundation to continue advocating, educating and acting on cleaning up our shorelines on the Sunshine Coast.
This November 9, Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast are presenting the Eco Challenge; a free, licensed, all ages event to raise awareness and funds for the very important work they carry out each day in the local community.
The Eco Challenge will include a star-studded music line-up; eco village market stalls featuring local green, sustainable and ecological businesses and non-profits, a mobile skate ramp and wooden surfboard competition.
The Eco Challenge is a sustainable surfing and lifestyle community event which will take place at the Kawana SLSC on Sunday Nov 9 at Kawana SLSC. On behalf of Surfrider Foundation Eco Challenge event Climate Wave Enterprises – eco-logical event management arranged for the installation of a 200-panel 50KW solar as a legacy following ISO 20121 Sustainable Event Management System Guidelines. This is a 1/2 million dollar legacy that the Eco Challenge is incredibly proud of.
Craig Macintyre, Surfrider Sunshine Coast Branch President says, “The Surfrider Sunshine Coast branch conducts monthly beach clean ups, dune care, school education and is actively involved with other local environmental & community groups. Keeping our coastline and surf breaks clean and healthy is what Surfrider is all about. The Eco Challenge is the perfect platform to showcase and promote what we do and why we do it, to a large-scale audience. I’m blown away by the support we have had this year, from the seven huge local bands; to the surfing and skate comp crews; to our partners and supporters; and most importantly, our volunteers who run it! The Eco Challenge is coming! Challenge yourself, challenge society.”
