Dave Johnston has been a friend of mine for a few years now, not a close friend but a man I admire for his ethics and stance on life. Dave and I first met when involved in our local environmental industry group committee, I’ve met his lovely family and we used to carpool to meetings but I never knew he was a budding film maker and an accomplished didgeridoo player.
A mutual friend of us both, Jeff Licence had previously shown interest in shooting some film for the event but was recently head hunted by ABC TV Lismore, so when Dave mentioned he’d like to work on the project I was gobsmacked, pleasantly of course…the timing was perfect.
So Eco Challenge Gold Coast is now partnering with Dave Johnston, a local filmmaker, to create a short film about the alternative surfing event, part of Bleach festival.
As the Eco Challenge is the first event of its kind on the Gold Coast, the aim is to capture the spirit of the day and your impressions of sustainable surf craft.
“I’m excited to be a part of the Eco Challenge as improving environmental sustainability is very important to me” said Dave.
“This event is an awesome way to showcase ideas like these wooden boards…I can’t wait to see how they handle in the local waves.”
This is not Dave’s first involvement with southern Gold Coast festivals, as last year his short film ‘Midlife Crisis’ was awarded first place at the inaugural Sunset Film Jam as part of Kirra Kite Festival.
We are so stoked to have Dave on board and looking forward to seeing his footage, actually speaking of that, we will be posting regular clips of Dave’s work in the form of interviews with various local wooden surfboard shapers and identities. So keep your eyes out on the home page and become a friend on our Facebook page for all updates on the event.
If you can make it to the event which is on 16th of March 9am to 1pm at Tomewin St, Currumbin Beach you’ll see Dave and a few of his minions filming the event, so say g’day, we’d love to interview you about your thoughts on alternative surf craft & sustainable events.
