Gold Coast Surfrider Foundation announces their fourth Annual Beach Eco Challenge Festival
The Gold Coast Surfrider Foundation has announced its fourth annual Eco Challenge Festival to be held on Saturday 1st April at Tweed Heads & Coolangatta (Greenmount) Surf Living Saving Club.
Surfrider Foundation Eco Challenge Gold Coast is a family friendly, sustainable, solar powered, plastic free, community, surfing lifestyle fundraising event which raises much needed funds for the Gold Coast ocean & beaches conservation organisation. The event will include the Roots of Surfing Wooden Surfboard Teams Challenge, Live Bands, Hula Dancing coaching & display, Jumping Castle, Raffle prize draws, talks on sustainability, market stalls, children’s workshops, sandcastle demonstrations, beach races, free surf lessons and much more.
Greg Howell, Gold Coast Surfrider Foundation President and Climate Wave Enterprises Event Director says “This is a really exciting time for us. People are really becoming aware of the impact that they have on their environment and in particular, our beaches. This kind of event raises funds which go towards Surfrider Foundation’s projects including ‘Rise above Plastics’ ‘Dune Care’ ‘Beach Clean Up’s’ and actively caring for the beaches on the Gold Coast.”
“We’re seeing this event grow year on year and this year is going to be no exception. But what’s also important to us is demonstrating to the rest of the Gold Coast how you can run such an event and really reduce your carbon footprint and environmental impact. We’ll be ensuring that the energy we use are from renewable energies and we’ll be providing zero waste stations to ensure that as much waste is diverted from landfill as possible.”
The Surfrider Foundation Eco Challenge Gold Coast is leading the way by actioning sustainable/responsible practices similar to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games who follow these same principles and they are combining many of these practices.
In addition to the fundraising element for Surfrider Foundation, the Eco Challenge provides a way for Surf Living Saving Clubs to receive a green legacy. Climate Wave Enterprises the event organisers will instigate to instal a solar energy system on the roof of the clubhouse. Such an initiative will help reduce the carbon footprint of the clubs and receive savings of around .5 $Million are achievable.
Surfrider Foundation are seeking both business sponsors and volunteers to support the event. “We can’t do this type of event without the help of our local community”, says Greg. “We’re looking for businesses who can get behind the event through sponsorship or volunteers who can spare a few hours of their time.”
