Surfrider Foundation Eco Challenge Gold Coast Event Supporting Partner Information
Are you looking for the perfect event to carry your company’s message to your audience?
Look no further, here is a family friendly, sustainable, community, surfing lifestyle fundraising event that is looking at going Australia wide after holding 4 successful events in South East Queensland since 2011.
Event overview and objectives
The Surfrider Foundation Eco Challenge Gold Coast is back for its fourth year as part of Bleach Festival.
This event generates a unique opportunity to communicate on a large scale, sustainability principles and how they are transformed into daily actions. Ultimately the event raises funds and awareness for Surfrider Foundation Australia’s, local branch – The Gold Coast’s efforts, highlighting coastal issues such as water quality, marine debris, coastal erosion issues & sustainable solutions, environmental awareness campaigns & education programs including Surfrider’s major campaigns ‘RISE ABOVE PLASTICS” and ‘ENDANGERED WAVES”.
It’s all about enjoying the coast, protecting and promoting its health. Therefore we have created a fantastic line-up of events to highlight this in all aspects, so that the whole family can enjoy and take home valuable insights. For the first time ever a battle of the Parks, the Gold Coast event will see “The Worlds” Roots of Surfing Teams Challenge, yes Seaworld surfing against Movieworld etc in an epic wooden surfboard event.
We call upon local communities and friends from far and wide to engage, enjoy and protect what we love: the waves, oceans and beaches.
Event History
The Eco Challenge has been run in Coolum since 2011 as the environmental component and 2nd day of the iconic Golden Days Festival. The event attracts professional surfers, skaters, iconic alternative surfboard shapers, touring musicians, amongst the local community in a beautiful coastal setting. In its fourth year on the Gold Coast we will see the potential of this event building as it morphs into its potential.
There are lots of family-oriented events and activities held throughout the day which includes a pioneering & traditional surfing event on wooden boards where anyone can enter and try out, with demos and shaping displays. Live music, a skating event for young and old, interactive art and eco workshops and an eco-village market stalls. The whole day promotes local, innovative & sustainable product alternatives to everyday consumer goods.
Event Reach
This event will be repeated annually on the Sunshine & Gold Coasts and from next year several other locations around Australia with Surfrider Foundation Branches.
Reach that SF Pages have.. likes + members followers etc.

Event Legacy
This is an Australian first, where several businesses have partnered with two non-profit organisations to leave a legacy of close to half a $Million for the community all by hosting a one day sustainable event. How good’s that! The statistics below are calculated on a 50 kilowatt/200 solar panel installation over the guaranteed period of the panels which is 25 years (panels can last 40 years).
Climate Wave Enterprises has teamed up with Surfrider Foundation Australia to provide a permanent Australian-accredited solar power system for the Tweed Heads & Coolangatta (Greenmount) Surf Life Saving Club, which is guaranteed for 25 years of operation. The investment will significantly reduce the club’s power bills – a direct cost benefit for the club and its members – as well as assisting them to become environmentally sustainable.
Furthermore, as part of the Eco Challenge Gold Coast event, anyone who purchases a solar system, for their home or business, an eco-dollar donation will be made to the Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast and the Tweed Heads & Coolangatta (Greenmount) Surf Life Saving Club.
Greg Howell, Managing Director of Climate Wave Enterprises who specialises in sustainable event management, is driving the sustainability and legacy for the Eco Challenge Gold Coast Surfing and Lifestyle event. “This event is the culmination of many years of adopting and practicing sustainable event solutions. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 20121 best management practices stipulate the importance of leaving a lasting legacy for the community – the Gold Coast Eco Challenge event partnership enables us to achieve that. It’s a win-win scenario,” said Greg.
So What’s the Challenge?
- We are challenging ourselves to organise a large event run as sustainably as possible which is a challenge in itself;
- The surfing is a challenge for everyone, being that its wooden boards & they are hard to ride, and also the boards come from a sustainable source;
- The Eco Village and speakers challenge the way people think and hope to encourage change with examples and product;
- We challenge all stall holders, bands & event venue to rise above plastics with a zero plastic policy for the event;
- Powering the live music is a challenge in itself, do we use solar power specifically for the stage or if necessary bio diesel generators;
- We challenge and encourage people to green their emissions on the day if they’ve driven/flown, or change their mode of transport;
- We challenge modern society and consumerism with running an event with ecological and sustainable practices, sponsors, solar power, legacy, promotion and everything in between.
